Drinking tea, for many people like me is a ritual that they religiously follow day after day. Have this ritual take place at a leisurely time of the day, with a comfortable place to sit, and it has the potential to develop into a spa-like activity that relaxes you and at the same time invigorates your senses.
White tea, came into the limelight when studies claimed that it had more antioxidants than green tea which helps to lose weight. While there is little empirical evidence to prove that white tea helps in weight loss, there is ample evidence that proves that drinking white tea leads to soothed nerves and a relaxed mind.
For a majority of regular tea drinkers like myself, the process of brewing tea is as relaxing as drinking the tea itself. The entire process of boiling water, steeping tea leaves and brewing a hot cup of white tea is a relaxing ritual. In order to really enjoy the process, take a few minutes of your day and brew the tea yourself. Instead of buying mass-produced white tea from a supermarket, I always buy high quality, single estate loose tea. This, I’ve found makes a lot of difference not just in the taste and freshness of the tea, but also in the health factors associated.
Following are some of the proven benefits of drinking white tea:
1. Reduces Stress & Anxiety
White tea contains an amino acid called L-Theanine that helps in reducing anxiety and creates a calming sensation. Combined with a very low level of caffeine, white tea does not lead to caffeine induced jitters if consumed late in the evening. Moreover, drinking a cup of hot tea in itself is a naturally calming activity which requires you to slow down for a moment. This also helps to alleviate stress and helps you relax.
2. Improves Concentration & Alertness
The high levels of L-Theanine- an amino acid when combined with caffeine provides greater alertness of the mind while simultaneously calming the senses. White tea has minimal levels of caffeine when compared to energy drinks, coffee etc. and therefore leaves you with all the benefits of caffeine like alertness and energy without any of the side-effects like insomnia, irritability or headaches. Studies have shown that regular drinking of white tea can improve concentration abilities, strengthen the immune system and lower blood pressure.
3. Reduces risk of rheumatoid arthritis
White tea’s anti-inflammatory properties lower the risk of getting rheumatoid arthritis according to various studies. For those who already suffer from it, regularly drinking white tea can reduce the inflammation, aches, and pains.
4. Promotes Healthy Skin
Drinking white tea regularly boosts healthy skin and also delays the aging process. White tea stops the enzymes that break down proteins like elastin and collagen in our body. This leads to slower aging, more smoothness and improved elasticity of the skin. It also protects the skin from the damage from free radicals
that are caused by elongated exposure to the sun or stress. Drinking white tea on a regular basis can have multiple positive benefits on your body- especially with regards to helping you relax. It is also thought to increase the level of dopamine in the body. Low levels of dopamine can lead to a lack of motivation, fatigue, mood swings and even memory loss. It’s, therefore, a good idea to keep your levels up through natural methods like drinking white tea.
Pro Tip: Always choose loose leaves from a well-known brand and brew your own tea. Avoid the supermarket humdrum that is available everywhere for it is rarely authentic. If you’re pressed for time, carry tea bags in your bag and choose white tea over coffee or other caffeinated beverages.
